The history of Rolling Hills Estates actually dates back to the establishment of the first Spanish rancho land grant in California.
It was Los Angeles County’s 60th municipality, incorporated on September 18, 1957. Prior to its incorporation, the area was primarily rural land characterized by rolling hills, sprawling ranches, and breathtaking vistas. The decision to incorporate came as a means to preserve the unique character of the region and to provide local governance tailored to the needs of its residents.The incorporation of other areas, especially between the years of 1959 and 1982, into the city lines of Rolling Hills Estates began in the city’s early years. Today, the city has thirty distinct neighborhoods, each with its own style and architecture.
Since its inception, Rolling Hills Estates has experienced steady growth in its population. According to the most recent census data, the city is home to approximately 8,968 residents. Despite its relatively small size, Rolling Hills Estates boasts a close-knit community where neighbors know each other by name and communal bonds are cherished.

Rolling Hills Country Day School is a private school that serves grades K-8. Chadwick School, a well-known K-12 private school, is located on Academy Hill, an unincorporated neighborhood administered by the county, but is actually just blocks away from the Rolling Hills Estates city hall and serves the entire Palos Verdes Peninsula area, including Rolling Hills Estates.
