Palos Verdes Downsizing FAQs

Downsizing means moving to a smaller or easier-to-manage home.  This guide explains how to plan, sort your belongings, prepare your home for sale, more successfully, and choose the right home for your next chapter.

Consider downsizing when your current home takes too much time, money, or physical effort to maintain. It may also make sense when you want fewer stairs, lower expenses, less unused space, or a home closer to family and daily needs.

The first step is to decide what you want your next chapter to look like. Think about where you want to live, how much space you need, your ideal timing, and your budget. Then get an accurate estimate of your current home’s value before making major decisions.

Selling first can clarify your budget and may make your next offer stronger. However, buying first may be better if you need time to find the right home. The best choice depends on your finances, timing, and local market conditions.

Start with the belongings you use, need, or truly love. Measure your future space, keep meaningful items, and sort everything else into categories to sell, donate, give to family, or discard. Working one room at a time makes the process more manageable.

Most downsizing moves take several months from planning to moving day. The timeline depends on how much you need to sort, whether your home requires preparation before selling, and how quickly you find your next home. Starting early helps reduce stress and rushed decisions.
