The Best Afternoon Itinerary in the South Bay: Palos Verdes, Hermosa, and Manhattan Beach

Suzanne Dyer|October 4, 2025

When friends come to visit, I love showing them the beauty and laid-back lifestyle of the South Bay. If I had just one afternoon to spend with a friend, I would want them to experience the dramatic cliffs of Palos Verdes, the ocean air of Hermosa Beach, and the lively energy of Manhattan Beach. It is the perfect way to showcase what makes this corner of Southern California so special.

Oceanfront Lunch at Terranea Resort

We would start at Terranea Resort in Palos Verdes. Lunch at their oceanfront restaurant Nelson’s is always a treat. The food is fresh and delicious, but the real star of the show is the view. Sitting on the cliffside picnic tables, you can watch the waves crash below and, if you are lucky, spot dolphins or migrating whales offshore. It is the kind of moment that instantly makes visitors fall in love with Palos Verdes.

Scenic Coastal Walks in Palos Verdes

After lunch, we would walk along the Palos Verdes coastal trails. These paths wind along the bluffs and offer some of the best views in California. A stop at the Point Vicente Lighthouse or the Interpretive Center adds a little history and charm, and both spots are perfect for photos. The natural beauty of the cliffs and coves is breathtaking, and it never fails to impress first-time visitors.

Ocean Fun in Hermosa Beach

From there, we would head down to Hermosa Beach. Nothing says Southern California more than sandy feet, ocean waves, and beach volleyball. Whether it is a quick swim, a barefoot stroll along the boardwalk, or simply sitting in the sand and soaking in the sun, Hermosa offers that classic beach-town energy. We would wander through Pier Plaza to grab an iced coffee or smoothie and enjoy some people-watching before heading to dinner.

Dinner with a Sunset View

Dinner would be in Hermosa Beach, where there are countless restaurants with a mix of casual and upscale vibes. Seafood with a view of the water is always a favorite. As the sun dips into the Pacific, the sky turns shades of orange and pink, creating the perfect backdrop for conversation and a relaxed meal.

Cocktails in Manhattan Beach

To finish off the evening, we would make our way to Manhattan Beach for cocktails. Manhattan has a fun, upscale energy with chic bars, trendy lounges, and oceanfront spots that glow at night. Whether it is a handcrafted cocktail overlooking the pier or a lively rooftop bar, it is the perfect way to toast to a day well spent. Strolling along the Manhattan Beach Pier after dinner with the city lights behind you and the sound of waves below is a quintessential South Bay experience.

A Perfect Snapshot of the South Bay

By the end of the afternoon, my friend would have experienced it all — the dramatic cliffs and coastal trails of Palos Verdes, the laid-back surf culture of Hermosa Beach, and the stylish nightlife of Manhattan Beach. To me, that combination of natural beauty, outdoor adventure, and coastal charm captures the heart of the South Bay. It is not just an afternoon itinerary, it is a snapshot of why so many people fall in love with living here.
