Back in 1901, the city was divided between George Peck and John Merill, Peck's area referred to as "Shore Acres" and Merrill's area named "Manhattan", after his previous home in New York City. They could not agree on a name, and a coin flip decided that the official name should be Manhattan. The 928-foot long Pier at the end of Manhattan Beach Boulevard offers free fishing all year. The pier also has an Aquarium attached to it, and is free to the public. It contains everything from baby sharks to lobsters and brightly colored fish. A great outing for families!

In downtown Manhattan Beach, you will find a great variety of dining restaurants, specialty boutiques and retailers selling everything from chocolate to art. It is a very pedestrian-friendly area and Manhattan also offers a concrete bike path alongside the beach as well as a 2.1 mile walkway for pedestrians.
